Male Barbershop Chorus in Hull
This motly crew will be part of the two choruses which will sing for you at Winter Song at Cottingham Civic hall on the evening of 9th December. Go to our events page to get more details.
Expect an evening packed with a cappella singing from Humber Harmony (men’s chorus) and Three Crown Sound (women’s chorus), a bit of joint singing, one or two Christmas gems and a spot by the Bakewell tarts – renown barbershop quartet from out of town.

We are holding FREE open rehearsals for singers wishing to have a go at Barbershop. Starting, on Monday 8th May 2023 and continuing over the next few weeks, we’ll be learning an a cappella version of the old Sinatra classic ‘That’s Life’, as well as dipping into our existing repertoire.
You can let us know if you are coming, or just turn up at our normal rehearsal venue at 7 pm (see page footer). You’re welcome to stick around after the rehearsal for a visit to a nearby pub where we usually have a chat and a bit of a ‘warble’
We won our category competition at this international competition held in Hull in April. The competition featured choirs from 10 different countries.
We performed 3 songs – ‘The Luckiest Sailor’ – a local song about the triple trawler disaster in 1968, ‘You Don’t Know Me’ – a classic love ballad, and ‘When You’re an Addams’ – a song from the Addams’ family musical.
We got a special judges award, the only one handed out in the whole competition, for The Luckiest Sailor.
You might guess by the look of the word ‘Interkultur’, it derives from somewhere in Europe. And you would be right.
It’s an international choir competition, and it coming to Hull at the end of April 2023, and we will be competing along with 30 or so other choirs.
Should be an exciting event, and we’re rehearsing 3 songs to be included in our entry. These are ‘You don’t know me’, a 50’s classic, ‘The Luckiest Sailor’, a locally written song about the Triple Trawler Tragedy of the 60’s, and ‘When you’re an Addams’ from the Addams family hit musical.

We are starting a 4 week ‘come and sing’ course for anyone who would like to have a go at a barbershop song.
It starts on Monday 30th May at the rehearsal venue which you’ll find on the bottom of our home page. It’s free so just turn up at 7:00pm on the night.
Even if you miss the first night, you can still catch-up on the following weekly rehearsals. Same time, day of the week and place.
Formal musical training or the ability to read music is not required. All you need to be able to do is hold a tune.
We’ll be working on mostly the Leonard Cohen song Hallelujah, which has a great barbershop arrangement. So come along – you will enjoy it
BABS (British Association Barbershop Singers) hold their annual convention and competitions each year in May and this year Humber Harmony turned in their best score ever.
Singing two songs with a ‘spooky’ theme including ‘When you’re an Addams’ from the Addams family hit musical, the chorus scored 63.7% and came 17th.
Now, you might say, that doesn’t sound great but we were 5% up on our last outing which pushed us 13 places up in the rankings – and, in the world of barbershop, that’s no mean feat.
What really matters is that we had a great time. just look at the faces of our singers here.

It was great to be invited to one of the Thursday night mini-concerts at the Hull Trinity Market food hall.
With an audience of a few hundred shoppers and diners we did our stuff, and I’m pretty sure the audience liked it. It was certainly a great gig to do from our point of view and was a nice last outing (or nearly last outing) for Christmas.

We’ve been doing some singer-recruiting over the last couple of months. The new men set off learning a new arrangement of Georgs Ezra’s Shotgun which they successfully finished in about 3 or 4 rehearsals. Have a look at this early run through the song. A bit rough in parts but you can see where it’s going.
Since then we’ve been working on a Christmas song called (would you believe) Warm and Fuzzy. Also we’ve started on a ballad based on the Wizard of Oz song – If I only had a Brain. More of that in future posts I’m sure.
Also our new guys are catching up on repertoire songs like, Country Roads, Java Jive and Hello Mary Lou. So a lot of learning going on but amazing to hear the results. They’ll soon be ready for some public performances, I think. Great work
Humber Harmony are looking forward to out first big show this year which is to be held at St Augustines Church Hedon.
We’ll be singing a full set of songs as will our sister chorus, Three Crown Sound.
Also appearing will be our quartet, The Cherry Burtones, with a guest set from the renowned Cottingham singer-songwriter and guitarist Rob Nicklas.

It’s been a long 18 months for us, as for just about every singing group everywhere. It looks, however, like we’re nearing the end, and we’re rehearsing inside again which is great! Get in touch with us if you’d like to get involved, by checking out the Contact tab.
Sunday was only our second public performance since coming out of lockdown (and those Zoom rehearsals…), and despite a few small speedbumps, we think we did a pretty good job – the audience agreed, which is the most important thing!
